Are you more of a history buff or a wildlife watcher? Do you yearn to follow the route of 19th
century gold-seekers, or is spotting a soaring eagle at the top of your list? Canada’s luxury
train, Rocky Mountaineer, offers three distinct rail routes connecting the coastal city of
Vancouver to the sky-high peaks of the Canadian Rocky Mountains so you can choose the
rail journey that’s perfect for you.
First Passage to the West
The two-day First Passage to the West route rolls along the historic tracks of the country’s first coast-to-coast railway between Vancouver and Banff or Lake Louise, with an overnight stay in Kamloops.
Pass by the raging rapids of Hell’s Gate, the twin rail bridges of Cisco Crossing, historic Craigellachie -the site of the “last spike” driven into the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1885 - and experience the engineering marvel of the Spiral Tunnels. As you travel through Banff National Park, you’ll be awed by towering views of the snow-capped Castle Mountain and
Mount Rundle.
Stay in the idyllic mountain towns of Banff or Lake Louise, nestled amongst dense alpine forests and jewel-hued lakes. In Banff, explore an eclectic mix of shops, galleries, museums, and restaurants, wander along picturesque trails, and admire the ever-present Cascade Mountain. Located 40-minutes northwest of Banff, Lake Louise also offers stunning views set against the backdrop of its brilliant turquoise waters. Stay at the historic Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise and discover a landscape you’ve only ever dreamed of.
Journey through the Clouds
For an experience off the beaten track, the two-day Journey through the Clouds route
travels between Vancouver and Jasper and traverses some of the most remote landscapes
in Canada.
With land and wildlife largely untouched by humans, you’ll travel alongside the mighty
Fraser River and through scenic valleys carved out by millennia. You’ll pass the rushing
Hell’s Gate - named for explorer Simon Fraser’s assertion that “surely these are the gates
of Hell” - and Cisco Crossing. Between Kamloops and Jasper, the train passes the glacier-
fed, three-tiered Pyramid Falls; Mount Albreda; and Mount Robson - the highest peak in the
Canadian Rockies at 3,954 metres (12,972 feet).
Mount Robson is so large that it often forms its own weather patterns, with clouds enveloping the peak while the rest of the sky is blue. Jasper National Park is also a Dark
Sky Preserve known for stargazing, with the Jasper Dark Sky festival taking place at the end of each train season in late October. Cruise on the glacial waters of Maligne Lake,
explore rugged hiking trails, and enjoy some of the best outdoor recreation in the Canadian Rockies.
Rainforest to Gold Rush
For those that want to delve further into Western Canada’s history and diverse landscapes - as well as spend more time onboard the train - the three-day Rainforest to Gold Rush route takes a northerly path between Vancouver and Jasper, uncovering the stories of those seeking their fortune in the Cariboo Gold Rush.
This train route boasts the most trestle bridges, making it a favorite with rail fans. Climb through rainforest into the alpine alongside the southern fjord of Howe Sound, pass the deep turquoise waters of Seton and Anderson lakes, travel along the desert-like Cariboo Plateau, cross the historic Cottonwood River Bridge, and take in the larger-than-life Mount Robson. With two of Western Canada’s best outdoor adventure hubs on this train journey, Whistler and Jasper, this rail route is the perfect fit for those who want to see and do all they can in the wilderness.
